After a fourth-place finish at Western States earlier this summer in the fastest debut ever, Jeff Mogavero is hungry for more 100-mile success. He also explained to Outside Run just days before the 2025 UTMB in Chamonix, France, that he’s hungry for an Egg McMuffin.
The 31-year-old ultrarunner from Missoula, Montana, isn’t planning on eating much solid food during his 106-mile traverse of the Mont Blanc massif, as he’ll be on Precision Hydration gels. But the McDonald’s breakfast specialty will help him with motivation, he says.
Despite his mostly-vegetarian diet, the fast-food cravings hit hard during a 100-miler.
Fueling isn’t the only area where Mogavero is making some unconventional choices. With an extensive mandatory gear list, UTMB requires all runners to carry a litany of items in case of emergency, from waterproof pants to elastic bandage, to a smartphone with UTMB’s Live Trail app.
Elites are further faced with the challenge of fulfilling these requirements while keeping their kit as light as possible. That’s why Mogavero will be carrying a tech secret weapon, the Unihertz Jelly smartphone, weighing in at just over 2 ounces.
We met up with Mogavero in Chamonix to see what he’ll be taking on his UTMB journey. Here’s the gear he’ll be racing with.
Bonjour from Mont Blanc! We’re on the ground in Chamonix, France, to bring you behind-the-scenes coverage of the 2025 UTMB World Series Finals. Tune into the free livestream on OutsideTV starting on August 29 at 2:30 a.m. ET/August 28 at 11:30 p.m. PT. Outside+ members can watch the on-demand replay at any time.
On race day, Jeff Mogavero will be racing in the Cloudultra Pros, On’s new trail super shoe.
With challenging weather forecasted, Mogavero will most likely be packing the mandatory cold weather race-day kit, including the On Ultra Pants, jacket, and Trail Light Shorts, and the Performance-T, Winter Baselayer, Performance Arm Sleeves, Core Gloves, Cap, Elite Run Socks, tights, and a buff.
As conditions can change wildly during the overnight 100-mile-plus event, Mogavero will use the Ultra Vest Pro, Quiver, and Belt to carry everything else. He’ll use no less than four headlamps to help him see: a Petzl Swift RL Headlamp and e+LITE Headlamp, a Black Diamond Sprinter 500 Headlamp, and a Kogalla RA Waist Lamp. He’ll also be using Leki Ultratrail FX Poles, Julbo Fury Sunglasses, a Coros Armband HRM, a Space Blanket, backup batteries, a cup, and the super lightweight Unihertz Jelly 2E Smartphone.
